Tissue Paper Ball Holiday Craft!

You could not help but find this craft all over Pinterest this year, and my assistant and I fell in love with the look of these for holiday decorations. My idea was wanted to hang something fun and whimsical in my entryway before my holiday parties this year.

Here is how we arranged our different sized tissue paper hangings:

Start with 20X30 sheets of tissue paper. We found various versions with 6,8, or 10 tissue sheets stacked together. We found that 6 works best - 8 is just too thick.  We also tried varied versions of thickness of the accordion folding: but 1.5 inches works best for us :)

We aren't perfect at folding, you might not be either. Just cut off the extra on both ends and the side until everything is square. Measure the middle of the stack for the next step.
We used florist wire to hold the pile together, Pinterest said you could also use a twist tie to hold the middle of the pile.
Before you start the unfolding process, add the ribbon/string/fishing string so you can hang this beauty when finished.
Layout the stack on its side and start by pulling up the top tissue paper.
Since we used 6 sheets on this tissue ball, I pulled 3 sheets "up" and 3 sheets "down"  being able to adjust at the end.
Before any pulling of the sheets you can cut the edges of the stack in a rounded or pointed edges. We preferred not doing anything to the edges.
Didn't this turn out well? My entryway is covered in sparkle and holiday cheer!

The pink ball is 18 inches in diameter, the blue is 15 inches in diameter. These pointed-edged silver balls are 10 inches in diameter.
Happy Holidays everyone!!!

America’s Detrimental Addiction: Processed Sugar

Who doesn’t know candy; cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, soda, sugary drinks and other sweet treats were bad for the waistline when over enjoyed?  However, how many of us know just how detrimental and addictive processed sugar can be?  And, do you know where it lurks in our foods, including “healthy” foods?  I just recently became aware of how bad processed sugar is for the human body and all the sneaky places it can be found in our diets…even healthy diets.

You think you are being “healthy” by eating “reduced fat” and “fat free” products.  Well, sadly, any food product that is either “reduced fat” or “fat free” is loaded with sugar to compensate for the lack of fat.  Calories are calories my friends and in order to perform our bodies need some healthy fats so replacing them with sugar is not a good idea.  As a matter of fact, a recent study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found we are consuming more than three times the six- teaspoons –per-day maximum of sugar recommended by the American Heart Association.  All that sugar adds up to about 300-plus calories each day.  To gain or lose one pound of body weight takes 3,600 calories.  This means if you are downing 300 extra calories just in sugar you will gain one pound in 12 days…just over 30 pounds in a year.

Natural sugar, which our bodies processes easily, can be found in fruit and vegetables like beets, corn, and potatoes so before you enjoy your chocolate chip cookie, you’ve probably already consumed all the sugar your body needs.  Don’t cut back on your produce!  Simply be aware of how much processed sugar is in all the pre-packaged foods you eat.  It is hidden in things that don’t even taste sweet such as bread and salad dressing.

Now you are wondering, “What is so toxic about sugar?”  Basically, sugar is made of both fructose and glucose molecules, which are metabolized differently by your body.  When consumed in excess, fructose triggers your liver to convert it to fat, while glucose triggers a blood-sugar spike and the release of insulin, a fat storing hormone, to counter-act the spike.  This means that eating too much sugar may stimulate your appetite rather than satisfy it, leading to craving more food after eating sugar.  How sneaky!!!  The worst of it all is that in addition to sugar’s association with obesity, excess sugar consumption has been linked to serious conditions like insulin resistance, high triglycerides, fatty liver, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

Be sure to just say, “no” to sugary drinks as well.  Researchers speculate that the human body didn’t evolve to register liquid calories the same way it does solid food.  By eliminating sugary drinks, you can slash 350 – 500 calories a day from your diet.

Whether you are either trying to lose weight, or stay healthy it’s a good idea to reduce the amount of processed sugar in your diet.  I still have an occasional sweet treat, after all, I’m human, but by taking processed sugar out of my diet I feel lighter, happier and more energized.

Health Tip:  Super Easy-Gift Quality DIY Sugar Scrub for the Shower

Don’t throw out your processed sugar!  Use it to make an exfoliating treat for your hands, feet and entire body.  This also makes a lovely gift at the holidays in a canning jar with pretty ribbon and a cute label.

Ingredients:
Brown Sugar
White sugar
Olive Oil (great antioxidant for your skin)
Lemon juice or any high quality essential oil for scent and extra antioxidant benefits

Using a whisk, mix equal amounts of the brown and white sugar in a bowl.  Slowly pour in enough olive oil to the sugar mixture until crumbly.  Add drops of the essential oil of your choices and whisk thoroughly.  If using lemon juice, add about one tablespoon and a bit more oil until creamy.  Place contents in canning jar and decorate, as you like.  Voila!  Summertime, wintertime, anytime skin treat without the calories.

How To Repair Cracked Heels and Soothe Dry Feet

I don't know about you, but the summer sandal craze really makes me want to keep my feet sandal ready. I came up with a great (and pampering) way to get those pretty feet. We do this technique at our Spa Parties, so please let me know if you would like to have a spa party for a pampering night with your friends.

How To Repair Cracked Heels and Soothe Dry Feet
What You Will Need:
Epsom Salts, Polishing Bar, Foot Pumice Foot Stone or Foot File, & Sole Solutions
This may be done anytime of day or before bed.

            1.      Place ½ cup to 1 cup Epsom salts in tub of water, as warm as you like. (The ones I sent you are   infused with lemongrass oil that isn’t necessary just smell nice).  The Epsom salts are made of magnesium sulfate, which will help soften and heal the skin of your feet.

            2.      Soak feet at least 10 minutes but may soak as long as you wish.

3.  One foot at a time, rub all over with polishing bar.  The polishing bar polishes your skin while you cleanse. Containing Glacial Marine Mud and sisku’pas (ground bark)—used by Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest to smooth the skin—this soap-free, allover deep cleanser effectively cleanses while helping slough off dead skin cells for a smooth, clean feeling.  The Glacial Marine Mud contains more than 50 skin beneficial minerals and trace elements for deep skin conditioning.

4.  Before rinsing polishing bar off of foot, use pumice foot stone or foot file with as much pressure as is comfortable.

5. Rinse foot, place back in tub with Epsom salts.  Repeat with other foot.

6.  Soak feet for 5 more minutes in Epsom salts.

7.  Rinse and dry feet completely.

8.  On each foot, using about the size of a quarter, rub Sole Solution, concentrating on driest spots, which is usually the heels.  May apply more to heels if cracked.

9.  Put on a pair of socks for at least 30 minutes or if before bed wait until Sole Solution has dried, 5 minutes before sliding feet between the sheets to protect your sheets.

*If this procedure was done during the day, wash feet before bed with Polishing Bar and then apply Sole Solution as in #9.

I had to show a few pictures from the 4th of July celebrations we had with family and friends yesterday.

yummy festive desserts (at least the berries are full of antioxidants! ;))

Joy's very appropriate and cute toes for the party!

How to Make the Perfect Summer Banner

We bought quilting squares - 5 for $5.59 (on sale) each square makes 2 double sided triangles for 10 triangles per bundle.
Make a Triangle pattern out of a manilla folder - ours is 8 1/4 inches across and 10.5 inches long from tip to the center of the top.
Trace the pattern using a marker and cut it out using a fabric scissor. We enjoyed using a zig zag scissor. (This works MUCH quicker with the help of an assistant)
The fabric comes a little wrinkled so we starched and ironed the triangles which worked really well.
If you can see, we marked the middle of our Piping cord (which we recommend using) and started in the middle of our cord. In order to not have the fabric pieces shifting on the line, to use fabric glue to glue the piping cord along the crease.

Then glue along the sides of the triangle and fold over the top triangle to the bottom half.

Natural Home Tips for Going Greener and Healthier!

I posted this Health Tip in one of our March blogs and I thought “Why not share some more?”

Health Tip: A Naturally Clean Kitchen Free of Germs, Grime and Toxic Chemicals
For instant glass, counter top and appliance cleaner, fill a spray bottle with ½ water and ½ white vinegar and add a few drops of essential citrus oil. Citrus oils such as lemon, lime and orange are natural degreasers for that great shine and smell in your kitchen.

I had bought Natural Home and Garden magazine and it is full of easy and natural tips for around our homes. Here is a list of a few pieces of advice from the magazine.

·         Bee Aware: Honey at many grocery stores has undergone a quality-diminishing ultra-filtration process (gross) so be sure to look at your grocery store for local sources of honey. Plus then you are a supporting a local business!

·         READY-WHEN-YOU-NEED-THEM KITCHEN WIPES: Everyone loves those disinfectant wipes for the “extra clean” feeling for your kitchen. Instead of them, store multiple squares of cotton cloth in a container filled with a mixture of 1 cup water, 1 ounce liquid castile soap, and 6 to 8 drops of your favorite essential oil. The clothes can come from old t-shirts or pjs and can be washed and reused!

·         Don’t give up on Tough Jobs: For very greasy dishes, add ½ cup vinegar or lemon juice to dishwasher.

·         Healthier Laundry Room:
o   Add Baking soda to detergent to naturally brighten colors and eliminate odors
o   Pre-treat stains with a combination of washing soda, water, and baking soda
o   Rid the washer of bacteria, soap scum, and grease by running a cleaning cycle with white vinegar and hot water

Health Tip:  Fish – Best Choices & Worst Choices
We all know eating fish is good for our heart, brain, and waistline.  What we don’t know is that some fish are actually dangerous to eat because they can contain high levels of mercury.  No matter how small a dose, mercury is poisonous.  Some seafood is better for dieters because of the low amount of fat per serving.

Here’s the list:
Best
·         Wild Caught Salmon (not farm raised – that has a whole list of dangerous health and environmental risks see here
·         Mussels
·         Wild Sardines

Worst
·         Eel
·         Very large fish such as Blue Fin Tuna, Chilean Sea Bass, Orange Roughy, Swordfish; due to the high levels of mercury found in these fish

Good For Dieters
·         Tilapia
·         Crab
·         Mussels
·         Shrimp
Each of these has less than 150 calories in a 6 oz serving and are packed with protein so you will feel fuller longer.

This Year Give the Gift of a Personalized Beauty Basket…12 Days Until Christmas!

If you are like me you probably have a small collection of baskets, boxes and tins stored in a cabinet or on a shelf in your garage. Here’s an easy way to use that basket for a fun and different themed holiday gift. How fun is this?

Instead of a pre-made gift basket, dress up your own container, add items selected just for your recipient then wrap in clear cellophane. Pick out their favorite beauty magazine, throw in any of these delightful items: NS’s Herbal Mineral Bath for hydration while soaking in the tub, Exfoliant Scrub to remove rough, dry skin to smooth the face, Lip Gloss that plumps lips or Lip Balm (with sunscreen), and a cute headband – wrap in cellophane (found in any gift supply store) and tie together with a pretty ribbon tied in a bow with an ornament or jingle bell and you have a personalized gift. Add a handmade card if you are really crafty and want to make it really special. Please contact me very soon for your gift basket/stocking stuffer needs to get a 30% discount.

Health Tip: Winter Sun Protection
Enhance your sun protection with the right foods. “In general, fruits and vegetables are foods high in antioxidants and help us fight free radicals and sun damage, while foods such as meat, dairy products, simple carbohydrates, sugar and processed foods cause inflammation and can contribute to making sun damage worse,” according to leading dermatologists.
Foods like leafy greens, peppers, squash, watermelon, blueberries and tomatoes that are rich in vitamin C and the antioxidants, carotenoids and lycopenes can help prevent sun damage.
Don’t forget to apply a sunscreen even in the winter. NS’s tinted moisturizers with sunscreen provide light coverage and protection from the sun. NS’s Body Block with SPF 30 are good for both face and body with the added benefit of being water resistant, a very important detail in sun protection.
