Kickstart Your Summer Workouts!

Sick of the gym? Enjoy the summer sun and get out of the house for your workouts! Spend more time with family and friends and try new activities (and get off the couch!)

1.       Rent paddle boards and try this fantastic sport (Joy loves this!) They offer these to rent at many places including Santa Cruz (love this place), Lake Tahoe, and more!
2.       Lotus, CA has some great White Water Rafting for all skill levels – Feel the rush as you ride the rapids! Check out this Video!
3.       Learn how to climb a rock wall! Sacramento has many options - http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/top-lists/rock-climbing-walls-sacramento-davis-auburn-ranchocordova/
4.       Hiking is such a great option for those at all fitness levels. Explore a new part of the state and get some cute hiking gear! My favorite new spot to hike is Loon Lake. This remote location is bound to test your endurance as you trek over the beautiful terrain.
5.       Set up your own obstacle course in your yard! During that barbeque have your friends/family join you in setting your best time. Don’t forget the classics like a hula hoop, hopscotch, and jump ropes in this course!
   6.     Netflix has lots of workouts for you to try. Try doing a different one every day so you don’t get bored! Most are only 30 mins! Remember it only takes 30 minutes a day of exercise to stay fit and healthy. (UPDATE: As of August 1, 2012 Netflix instant is not offering the wonderful 30 minutes workouts. At least the DVDs are cheap!)
   7.       Date and a workout at the same time? Have you and your honey tried out ballroom dancing classes? Joy and her husband took classes before their wedding and wowed their guests with a routine!

8.       Kayaking at Lake Natoma – or for the really adventurous try wind surfing lessons! All classes taught by young professionals, mostly students from CSUS.
9.       Catch a wave at Half Moon Bay with surfing lessons.   Spend the weekend at one of the quaintest beach towns in NorCal and learn to surf! How Cali!
10.   Biker? At North Star try mountain biking – be sure to wear a helmet (and maybe other pads too).

Health Tip: Post Workout Smoothie!
Julie's Morning smoothie (In a blender):
1 banana
1 peach
1 kiwi
½ cup raspberries
½ cup unsweetened almond milk
1 tsp of local bee pollen, it helps my allergies and is full of protein and antioxidants
2 tbls maca root powder, aids in mental acuity, energy and helps modulate hormones plus it adds protein
3 -4 tbl of full, fat, plain greek yogurt *Fat free and low fat yogurt is not good for you if you are trying to maintain or lose weight.   Studies now show everyone needs a percentage of “good” fat or else your body will start to store fat.
½ cup of crushed ice
It’s a great way to cool off after a fun workout, and get those antioxidants everyone needs!

Here is Joy's tasty recipe ratios!
Add whatever combo of frozen (I like it icy and they are cheaper) fruit you want (she always adds a banana), a scoop of plain yogurt for creaminess, and liquid like almond milk. Enjoy!

Weight Loss Challenge Update: Week 2 - The Story Continues

I am so proud of the progress my Wendy and Renee are making! WOW! Wendy and Renee are losing weight at a very healthy rate to ensure they only lose fat not muscle. Renee is currently losing an average of 1 pound per week and Wendy is losing 1.5 pounds per week. In review of Wendy’s intake for last week, she needs to add some protein to her diet to maintain her muscle mass, important for her metabolism and overall health. Remember, it takes a deficit of 3,500 calories to lose 1 pound and you want those calories to come from fat not muscle. The best part is both of them FEEL so much better – both of the ladies find exorcising so much easier. Renee even ran in a 10K this past Saturday!
Wendy had some advice for those trying to drink 8 glasses of water each day: Add some flavor! She suggests having sparkling water, or adding lemon, lime, mint, cucumber, or MILO to help switch up your water routine. Thanks for the great suggestions Wendy!

Joining the Weight Loss Challenge last week was Joey. Joey is also in our antioxidant challenge and is excited to get a health routine into his daily schedule. How exciting to be following and supporting these 3 people!

Health Tip: Calorie Counting To Go

Last week I found the www.calorieking.com website while helping Wendy make a good choice at Papa Murphy’s. This website lists the calories for the items on the menus of most Fast Food Chains and Restaurants. I was impressed with the complete listing and just how many items listed at various places were actually healthy choices. Wendy’s choice at Papa Murphy’s was the Thincrust deLITE Chicken, Bacon, & Artichoke at 180 calories per slice and the bonus of artichokes for antioxidants and fiber. It also tells you what you have to do to burn those 180 calories: walk for 50 minutes, jog for 21 minutes, swim for 15 minutes, cycle for 27 minutes. Of course, the exercise continues to burn calories after you finish but how much is dependent on the type of exercise. Anyway, check it out! What is your favorite?

Super Charge Your Life: Weightloss Challenge Update 1

So here we are after one week on the redesign Weight Management program. Both Renee and Wendy lost weight. Yay! They are super excited with their results despite this was their first week and just really trying to figure out what to eat and when to eat it. As with any new program, you have to make it fit within your lifestyle and the demands your life places upon you. For Wendy, we decided she needed to incorporate more vegetables. She and I sat down and reviewed her likes and dislikes of the healthiest food choices as listed on the website (world’s healthiest foods). Listed there as well are ways you can enjoy each food choice as well if you have never tried any of these foods. Renee found she needed to add ½ a packet of Stevia to her shakes. Stevia is an excellent choice because it is a natural sweetener that doesn’t come with the unhealthy baggage of artificial sweeteners and it can help lower your blood pressure. I also gave them the 9 out of 10 rule. What this rule means is that if you eat 5 times a day the 10th one is a “cheat”. A “cheat” is a little treat to reward yourself because if you simply focus on what you cannot eat then you will feel deprived. If you feel deprived you will never make a life long change to a healthier, happier you. I applaud Wendy and Renee for their excellent work and dedication to their health. Below are some of the details of their week:

Renee:
• Lost 5.2 lbs
• Had the flu on Monday so she didn’t begin until Tuesday
• Adding some Stevia to shake made it sweet enough to enjoy it more.
• “Shakes are better to me just shaken not blended”
• Following advice of 9/10: every other day they get a cheat.

Wendy:
• “Feeling Really good”
• Lost 2.8 lbs
• “Having a chicken breast, sweet potato, and broccoli for dinner and one of the shakes for my snacks – today I’m feeling a lot less shaky and more energy.”
• Decided to update the plan add more calories with veggies, fruit and whole grains
• Saturday 1/28/12 Here was her day:
Exercise – Row for 30 minutes, plus run/walk for 30minutes.
Breakfast – shake w/water
Snack – organic popcorn salted 3 cups
Lunch
•Tuna salad with mayo and 1 slice of Klassic crisp bread
Snack
•¼ cup season sticks
•½ an orange
•Sea almonds
Dinner
•Chicken and rice with black beans
•Shake with water with water

If you are on a diet, don't forget to treat yourself once in a while! Without it you will go crazy and get discouraged! So enjoy a (just one) once in a while!

Health Tip: 5 Times A Day is the Way to a Slimmer, Healthier You!
Eat 5 times a day to increase your metabolism, reduce daytime fatigue and lose body fat not body muscle. When you eat small portions you are asking your body to process which kicks in your metabolism and prevents you from getting RAVENOUS! When you are starving you will eat anything as fast as you possible can so make poor choices which can makes you feel sluggish or “stuffed”. Maintaining a constant supply of food in your digestive tract keeps it humming along like a finely tuned engine giving you optimal performance. Then on your 10th food intake, (which occurs every other day at the rate of 5 meals/snacks a day) when you do need a little something sweet or salty you body is ready to process it quickly and efficiently.

Lifepak Nano Vitamins – Increase Your Annual Take Home Pay…Stay Well!

After Tuesday’s introduction to the Super Charge Your Life Challenges I thought I would explain the program and the product that all the Antioxidant Challengers are on – these supplements. This challenge is part of a “Health and Wellness” program at a local business. Businesses across America lose thousands of dollars a year due to employee illness. Being sick and missing work costs the employees as well. As employers tighten their budgets, “paid” sick days are becoming obsolete. Our Antioxidant Challengers work for a local employer who has implemented a health and wellness program to not only increase profits but help his employees improve their health for happier lives. As a NS Distributor, I receive training webinars teaching us more about the products we sell. This webinar is all about my awesome supplements and if you have 40 minutes to spare I highly recommended listening to the science proven results of the product.

Just a few pieces I really think you should listen to:
9:00 in – What the supplements all contain
20-22:00 – How your “score” increases over time
35:00 – instructions on how to take the vitamins

If you do not have 40 minutes here is a bullet summary of just the basic pieces of information provided by the company.
• For those 18 yrs and older
• Enhanced molecular delivery anti-aging program

• L.N has 60+ antioxidants
• L.N antioxidants are equivalent to “those found in 5-10 fruits and vegetables a day”
• “nano” means 1 billionth of a meter
• The technology is the manipulation of nutrients at the molecular level to enhance their benefits to the body
• Nano encapsulated nutrients do not cling together
a better delivery system
• Easier to absorb then normal fat-soluble nutrients, 5 fold increase in absorption
• Recommended to take twice a day with a meal that includes some fat for better absorption
• LN provides nutritional support for all body systems and organs:

It’s Time to Super Charge Your Life!: Antioxidant – Anti-Cancer Boost: The Best way to prevent or reverse aging is to be healthy. The best way to prevent cancer is to have a high antioxidant score. I am also following a group of 7 (including myself ) that have all just committed to improving their health with the best supplements in the market. Last week we tested everyone for their antioxidant levels with an Antioxidant Scanner . Here is our group and their scores: (we have one person to score yet)
Joy, 24 years old -29,000
Hannah, 24 years old -25,000
Mike, 24 years old – 19,000
Joey, 27 years old -15,000
Todd, 43 years old- 15,000
Julie (yes, this is me), 49 years old – 58,000 (18 month user of the product)

What Do These Scores Mean?

What’s Your Color? Score? On January 31st we will be hosting a drop-in antioxidant scanning from 4:30 -6:30 pm for anyone wanting to know how well equipped their bodies are to handle aging and disease! Knowing your antioxidant score is as important as knowing your blood pressure. I don’t know why we haven’t been told this before. The video below is from the Dr. Oz (you won’t believe his score) show about cancer prevention and antioxidants. It’s amazing to see how the average American scores.

These quotes support the importance of antioxidants.
“Low levels of antioxidant vitamins may increase the risk of several chronic diseases.” Journal of American Medical Association, June 19th, 2002
“The amount of antioxidants that you maintain in your body
is directly proportional to how long you will live.”
Richard Cutler, MD, Director of Anti-Aging Research, National Institute of Health
